About Us

UKWB (United Kingdom Wheelchair Basketball) was founded by Ray McBride and Lee Fawcett with the vision of making wheelchair basketball more accessible, affordable, and inclusive for players and clubs across the UK. Recognizing the challenges that smaller clubs faced in accessing competitive opportunities, they established UKWB as an alternative platform to provide structured, high-quality wheelchair basketball leagues and tournaments at various levels.

At its core, UKWB is dedicated to the growth and development of grassroots wheelchair basketball. By offering leagues that cater to different age groups and abilities, UKWB ensures that clubs of all sizes can participate without the financial and logistical barriers that have historically limited access to the sport. Their mission is to create a competitive but welcoming environment where players, whether juniors, seniors, or beginners, can thrive and improve their skills.

One of UKWB’s key initiatives has been the expansion of its Under 15s League, allowing younger athletes to compete regularly. In 2025, UKWB introduced the "Pick N Mix" team, an innovative concept bringing together players from multiple clubs to ensure that everyone, regardless of team size, had an opportunity to play. This initiative showcased UKWB’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring no player was left without a pathway to development.

UKWB has also been instrumental in offering opportunities for clubs outside the traditional league structure, enabling them to compete on their own terms. By focusing on affordability, they provide clubs with a cost-effective alternative to high-entry fee leagues, allowing more teams to enter structured competitions. This has helped increase participation across regions, strengthening the sport’s presence in both urban and rural communities.

A major part of UKWB’s success has been its ability to bring together a passionate wheelchair basketball community. Through active engagement on social media, they have created a space for clubs, players, and supporters to share updates, celebrate achievements, and connect with the broader community. The organization continues to evolve, with ongoing efforts to introduce new competitions, develop talent, and make the sport as accessible as possible.

UKWB is more than just a league provider; it is a movement dedicated to reshaping wheelchair basketball in the UK. By prioritizing inclusivity, affordability, and competitive opportunities for all, Ray McBride and Lee Fawcett have built an organization that continues to positively impact clubs and players at every level. Whether through junior development, senior competitions, or mixed-ability leagues, UKWB remains committed to ensuring that wheelchair basketball thrives nationwide.
