Liverpool Basketball Club, a staple of Merseyside basketball for over 50 years, expanded its commitment to inclusivity by integrating Southport Wheelchair Basketball Club into its structure. Formerly known as the Southport Meteors, the wheelchair basketball club had been a strong presence in UKWB competitions, fostering local talent and achieving notable success, including producing award-winning players.
The partnership, which began in 2023, brought new opportunities for wheelchair basketball athletes under the Liverpool Basketball Club banner. Southport had long been a key force in the development of the sport in the region, providing a platform for disabled and able-bodied players alike to train, compete, and grow. The move to Liverpool ensured greater resources, expanded coaching support, and a stronger foundation for the future.
Now, Liverpool Basketball Club offers a fully integrated program that includes junior and senior wheelchair basketball teams, continuing Southport’s legacy of competitive excellence and community engagement. Through this merger, the club has solidified its role as a leader in developing wheelchair basketball in the North West, ensuring players of all abilities have a pathway to progress in the sport.
